HINTS AND HELPS

To sweeten a smelly disposal, grind up several ice cubes after using... When cooking kraut, lay a slice of stale bread on top of the kraut before covering and it will absorb a lot of the odor...Moleskin adhesive (foot pads) is still a big favorite in preventing scratched or discolored floors. Just cut to fit bottom of chair legs or runners and apply ... To clean and reseason your waffle iron: Use enough cotton to cover the bottom grid when closed. Saturate with ammonia. Close waffle iron and let set for 24 hours. Remove cotton and if available, clean grids with a wire brush. Do not use soap and water. After cleaning, apply a good olive oil to reseason griddle. Bake a few waffles to throw away to remove ammonia and oil taste... If you cannot repair a dripping faucet at once, tie a string to the faucet, long enough to reach the sink, and the water will run silently down the string. When using bananas, slice them into pineapple juice, making sure the slices are covered by juice. You'll find the bananas won't discolor... In cutting flowers for the house, to give the longest life, cut roses when buds are soft. Use a sharp knife or scissors. Never break stems. Cut flowers in early morning or after dew has fallen at night; never at midday ... Add two tablespoons vinegar when canning strawberries. This will retain the red color of the berries ... To remove ink stains from, colored fabrics, mix dry mustard in a thick paste, spread it over the spots and let stand 24 hours. Then sponge with cold water. Those frustrating struggles with a jar lid that won't come loose can be eliminated by lining your hand with sandpaper before turning old coffee and tea stains in good tablecloths can be treated by soaking cloth in milk overnight and laundering as usual the next day... If you have cabinet doors that won't stay shut, place a small piece of adhesive tape on the top edge of each door to make a "bind."... For silver and silver plate items which are used primarily to look at, and not for practical purposes, to avoid having to polish them regularly, spray them with hair spray. Apply every two to three months. It washes off with mild (not detergent) soap and water, if you want to use the piece for serving... For a delicious fruit icing, add a can of strained pineapple baby food to powdered sugar... To make tasty hamburgers, mix several tablespoons of catsup and chopped onions in your ground beef. Let stand awhile before frying... For more good hints and helps, listen to THE OPEN LINE, Monday thru Friday from 3:10 to 4 PM on WMT RADIO.
